Giving the vast majority of insureds another piece of paper on top of the dozens they now receive, as presently mandated by the DOBI, will do nothing but add more confusion and misinformation to that which already exists. Insures need to be encouraged to actually read their policies, now written in plain English, and question their agents if there is something they don’t understand. And in that dozen or so “explanatory” pages they now get are more than enough to confuse insureds, or give them improper understandings of what the policy does or does not cover. LET THEM READ THE POLICY.
Insureds are now receiving far too many pages of explanations that are not a part of the policy, so one more will likely add to the confusion. Encourage them to read the policy, then contact their agent with their questions. They’ll learn more this way – both about their policy, and/or how badly informed their agent may be. They’ll be surprised how dumb their agent may be, and may select a better informed agent.
unfortunately, in NJ insured’s have almost no obligation to read or understand their policy. Really, who does not know now that HO policies don’t cover flood?
