June 18, 2015

Authorities have accused a Newark, New Jersey, police captain and a former officer of illegally accessing a private insurance database to sell the information to others.

Capt. Anthony Buono of Millstone, New Jersey, and former Officer Dino D’Elia of Nutley, New Jersey, are charged with computer theft and conspiracy for accessing a database made available to police to investigate insurance fraud.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office alleges Buono and D’Elia on more than 900 occasions obtained information about others from the database and sold the information to others for $100 per search as part of D’Elia’s private investigation business.

D’Elia took a disability retirement from the Newark Police Department six years ago.

It is not known if the men have lawyers.
