New York auditors report preventing 206 incorrect claims for $1.85 million in workers’ compensation and medical benefits last year while identifying 417 duplicate claims for $1.6 million paid over the past two years.
The Comptroller’s Office, which keeps three auditors at the Workers Compensation Board office, says faulty claims approved by the board in 2015 were incorrectly coded or otherwise inappropriate.
Auditors also report identifying 798 potential duplicate payments on claims by individuals and medical providers, with the board confirming 417 duplicates and reviewing others.
Auditors say 66 have already been refunded for $220,000.
In a response, board Chairman Robert Beloten notes that auditors reviewed all 1.26 million payment requests totaling about $1.69 billion processed over two years, with potential duplicates accounting for only 0.2 percent.
