How disturbing. In their vigor to influence already-troubled sexual assault policy at universities, Rolling Stone published a dishonest story without properly vetting the accuser’s story – which harms both actual rape victims and, of course, the falsely-accused fraternity members – and now intends to avoid damages by blaming the victims of their attack article?
Standards and ethics must be returned to mainstream media.
If ethics and standards are to return to mainstream media, don’t look to RS or CNN to lead the charge. Some of them still defend terrorists as ‘freedom fighters’; e.g. the Tsarneiv (sp?) brothers’ terrorist actions at the Boston Marathon, etc. I’m surprised RS hasn’t closed shop yet. I thought I read about a potential sale of RS recently, but didn’t pay much attention.
Rolling Stone needs to be made to pay the price for their initial indifference in publishing a story that they had to know would be devastating to the young men in the fraternity. Their lives must have been hell in the months following that story’s publication.
RS needs to pay dearly for their indiscretion if for no other reason than to set a precedent for other media outlets in this day of ‘fake news’.
So many of these media outlets are such whores for the story that they just don’t care who gets dragged through the mud. Making them pay $$ will change that.
I agree with the previous posters. The mainstream media must be accountable and must pay dearly for fake news. For example, Fox News retracted its repeated “reporting” of the fabricated conspiracy theories about the murder of Seth Rich, even though Hannity ran that baseless story repeatedly. I wonder if the network will chastise him for it? Maybe when hell freezes over?
The Seth Rich story needed some old fashioned investigative reporting that the mainstream media would never do. As Hannity has dropped it after learning more details, why do you claim there is bias or malice there? The word ‘conspiracy’ is soooo overused by those trying to defend someone or something that it leads me to believe there really is something sinister about Seth Rich’s death. I’m not saying the DNC murdered him, but that he knew something and they want no further investigation into what he knew. Again, I do not subscribe to a murder scenario, but am open to a cover-up of what Rich knew and was about to divulge to the media.
