Residents Say Home Run Balls from Local Rhode Island Field Damage Property

Residents in a Newport, R.I., neighborhood say baseballs hit out of a field used by a collegiate summer league team are damaging their houses and cars.

The Newport Daily News reports residents gathered at City Hall to discuss the errant balls that travel out of Cardines Field. The Newport Gulls, a New England Collegiate Baseball League team, uses the field.

Neighbors say games aren’t an issue but instead point to batting practice. Residents say the balls fly farther off of easy pitches.

Neighbors say netting the city raised over right field to protect them doesn’t stop balls from flying out of the ballpark.

Mayor Harry Winthrop plans to meet with the team this week. Team officials didn’t immediately comment.
