Derwart Named Deputy Commissioner of the Maryland Insurance Administration

Maryland Insurance Commissioner Kathleen A. Birrane has named Gregory M. Derwart as deputy commissioner of the Maryland Insurance Administration.

Since July 2020, Derwart has served as chief of staff for the administration, acting as a strategic advisor to Birrane, directing operational activities, leading special projects and coordinating the administration’s engagement with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

As deputy commissioner, Derwart will supervise and manage administrative operations within the Office of the Commissioner, including human resources, information technology, procurement and fiscal services.

Derwart has experience in state government, serving as managing director of Administration and Customer Experience at the Maryland Department of Commerce from 2015 to 2019. During his tenure, he led Governor Larry Hogan’s statewide Customer Service Promise initiative, conducting research and implementing improvement plans across 40 state agencies, including training, recognition programs, performance metrics and satisfaction surveys.

Derwart also served as director of the Division of Administration for the Maryland Transportation Authority from 2005 to 2007.

Immediately prior to joining the Maryland Insurance Administration, Derwart was chief operating officer at Maller Wealth Advisors in Hunt Valley, Maryland. During his career, he also served as chief operating officer at the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts and The Arc of Baltimore.
