At Least 60 Dead in Greek Ferry Disaster

While the search for victims continues, at least 60 people have been confirmed dead in the sinking of the Greek Ferry Express Samina off the island of Paros in the Aegean Sea on Tuesday night.

According to press reports the captain and several crew members have been detained by Greek authorities who are investigating why the ferry struck a clearly marked reef while coming into port, and sank within minutes. Early reports indicate the crew may have been watching a soccer match at the time, despite the rough seas the ship was experiencing.

The total of victims may rise as the Greek Coastguard, local fisherman and several British Navy ships continue their search for survivors. The ship reportedly carried 530 passengers and crew members, but the exact total is unknown.
