Royal and Sun Fires Employees For Lewd

The U.K.’s Royal & Sun Alliance has reportedly taken the ultimate sanction, termination of employment, against at least 10 employees in its Liverpool office following the discovery that they were involved in sending e-mails featuring cartoon characters Bart Simpson, Kermit the Frog and others in “lewd and obscene” situations.

RSA launched an investigation in December when one of the e-mails ended up on the screen of a company director. It initially suspended around 100 employees, and in addition to the 10 who’ve now been fired, has instituted disciplinary proceedings against 75 others.

An unnamed source told the U.K.’s Daily Telegraph that the heavy sanctions were “an absurd overreaction” on the part of the company that had shocked employees. The source maintained that, while the e-mails may have been obscene, they weren’t in any way illegal.

RSA maintains that it has a firm policy about what is acceptable, and what isn’t, which it will rigorously enforce.
