Head Receives IIS Gold Medal Award

Dr. George Head received the John S. Bickley Founder’s Gold Medal from the International Insurance Society (IIS) recently at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. The award was presented at IIS’s annual meeting, which was attended by more than 800 executives from 56 countries.

Dr. Head, director emeritus of the American Institute for CPCU and the Insurance Institute of America, headed those organizations’ risk management and loss control education programs for more than 30 years. He took early retirement in 1999.

Dr. Head was selected by IIS’s Honors Committee from a group of approximately 80 nominees. The award criteria included the following: (1) the nominee must have made a singularly creative or innovative contribution to insurance thought, practice, or education; and (2) the contribution should be recognized for its memorable, favorable, and lasting impact.

In accepting the award, Dr. Head noted, “I am fortunate to have begun my career in the 1960s, when risk management was emerging as a discipline whose strategies empower each of us to improve his or her life by coping rationally with risks—risks both from threats of unforeseen losses and from surprising opportunities for gains. I have been able to share with others the thrill of first learning and then teaching effective strategies for achieving our full potential in a world which, while still risky, the discipline of risk management helps us better understand, control, and conquer.”

Now serving as a risk management consultant, Dr. Head writes articles for industry publications. He has joined the Nonprofit Risk Management Center in Washington, D.C., as a telecommuting special advisor. Dr. Head has earned numerous awards for his contributions to the field of risk management education.
