In its fourth annual issue of topics: annual review of North American catastrophes, American Re is reviewing the major natural catastrophes of 2004, assesses their impact on the insurance industry, and identifies lessons that can be learned from these events.
The issue focuses on the four hurricanes — Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne — which made landfall in Florida and Alabama over a six-week period in August and September 2004, incurring more than $30 billion in insured loss and killing thousands of people across the Caribbean and the U.S.
Also discussed in the issue are winter storms and thunderstorms of 2004, as well as the potential for a tsunami in the U.S.
