Lloyd’s announced an appeal to find relatives of war heroes who worked at Lloyd’s and lost their lives during the two World Wars.
In a bulletin on it web site (www.lloyds.com) Lloyd’s explained that the appeal “comes ahead of a service of dedication and the unveiling of a new memorial at its famous One Lime Street building on July 2nd.
“434 men associated with Lloyd’s died in combat during the two wars and insurance market wants to trace the relatives of those who died so they can join in the commemoration event.”
The dedication ceremony will be open to the public and will feature a parade from the Navy, Army and the Air Force, the Band of the Blues and Royals and the State Trumpeters. The unveiling of the new Lloyd’s War Memorials will take place at 11:00 a.m. at the Lutyens Arch at the Lloyd’s Building on Leadenhall Street.
Lloyd’s Chairman Lord Levene will be joined by His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester and the Bishop of London. “It has never been more important to honor our armed services – both those who are currently serving in armed conflicts and those who have lost their lives in past wars,” he stated. “Through this event and the benevolence of the Lloyd’s Patriotic Fund we will be able to do both.
“The event on 2nd July will commemorate the brave actions of those who served both the market and their country. It will be a unique opportunity to recognize their roles and the contribution played by Britain’s armed forces and their families.”
Lloyd’s has a long history of support for Britain’s service personnel and their families. It goes back 200 years to the end of the Napoleonic Wars when Lloyd’s established the Patriotic Fund – the oldest naval and military charity of its kind. The fund continues to provide financial assistance to ex-servicemen and women, their widows and dependants.
“In May, the fund became one of the key sponsors of City Salute and made a £300,000 donation to SSAFA Forces Help, one of the two charities benefiting from the City Salute Appeal,” said Lloyd’s. “The donation was made in response to the urgent need to provide family accommodation near Headley Court and Selly Oak where injured service personnel are treated.
Lloyd’s also announced the launch of a new web site in conjunction with the memorial service – www.lloyds.com/warmemorial. It is dedicated to those who served at Lloyd’s during both wars.
