Hurricane Center Tracking ‘Tropical Wave’ in Atlantic Ocean

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said it is currently tracking a “strong tropical wave over the extreme eastern Atlantic Ocean about 330 miles southeast of Sal in the Cape Verde Islands.”

The NHC said satellite images indicate that the system “is gradually becoming better organized. Environmental conditions appear conducive for further development and this system has the potential to become a tropical depression over the next couple of days as it moves generally westward at about 15 mph.”

While the system is all the way across the Atlantic from the U.S. and the Caribbean, the area of formation off of the Cape Verde Islands has historically birthed some of the most powerful hurricanes.
