Heavy Rains Trigger Flooding in Central Europe

July 1, 2009

According to a report from Risk Management Solutions, last week’s extremely heavy rainfall, which continued for three days over Central Europe, triggered severe flooding across parts of the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland and Austria and putting Hungary on a high state of alert.

“The heavy rainfall has impacted the upper Danube and Oder basins,” said RMS. “Swollen rivers are reported in southern Germ Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary. Northern Austria and the eastern Czech Republic have experienced the worst flooding so far as the flood wave is expected to move downstream over the coming days.”

However, RMS added that the present flooding “does not appear as severe as the devastating floods of 1997 and 2002 which hit the region.”

The widespread flooding has caused significant damage across Central Europe with six countries affected: the Czech Republic and Austria being the most severely hit. “So far, at least 10 people have been killed by the flooding,” said the report. In the Czech Republic, hundreds of homes have been flooded in the Moravo-Silesian Region located in east Moravia and south Moravia. Homes have also been left badly damaged across Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Burgenland and Styria in Austria
