Tropical Storm Fiona is located about 610 miles, 980 kms south of Bermuda, according to the National Hurricane Center’s 8:00 a.m. AST bulletin. The storm is moving toward the northwest near 17 mph, 28 km/hr.
The NHC said this “general motion with a decrease in forward speed is expected today, followed by a turn toward the north later tonight, and a turn toward the northeast on Friday. On the forecast track Fiona is expected to pass near Bermuda early Saturday.”
Maximum sustained winds remain near 50 mph, 85 km/hr. with higher gusts. The HC said “little change in strength is forecast during the next 48 hours.
On the present rack Fiona remains a threat only to Bermuda.
However, the NHC is also tracking Tropical Storm Gaston. It is presently located about 965 miles, 1550 kms west of the Cape Verde Islands, and around 1550 miles, 2495 kms east of the Lesser Antilles.
Gaston is moving toward the west near 9 mph, 15 km/hr, and this general motion, with a decrease in forward speed, should continue during the next couple of days.
Maximum sustained winds remain near 40 mph, 65 km/hr with higher gusts. The NHC said “gradual strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 70 miles, 110 kms from the center.”
According to the 5-day forecast track, Gaston is headed almost due west, which, if it continues in this direction, would indicate that it could strike the Leeward Islands sometime next week.
