Korean Navy Rescues Hijacked Crew; Kills 8 Pirates

The latest news reports have covered the successful rescue of all of the 21 crew members of the South Korean-owned Samho Jewelry by Korean navy commandos.

The reports indicate that 8 of the Somali-based pirates, who took over the ship on Saturday, were killed and the remaining 5 have been taken prisoner.

The ship was on its way from the United Arab Emirates to Sri Lanka with a cargo of chemicals when it was seized by the pirates in the Gulf of Aden, approximately 800 miles (1280 kms) from the Somali coast.

The Korean government immediately dispatched the Destroyer Choi Young, which was in the area as part of the naval forces patrolling the ocean off Somalia, with instructions to retake the Samho Jewelry and rescue the crew by all possible means.

It appears that they did just that.
