June 8, 2012

International insurance economics think tank, The Geneva Association, has appointed John H. Fitzpatrick Secretary General and Managing Director. He has spent his entire career in insurance and financial services, serving as CFO of two publicly listed corporations, Kemper Corporation in the U.S. and Swiss Re Group in Switzerland.

He headed Swiss Re’s Life and Health business group and its Financial Services business group as well as in other executive management positions in his career. Fitzpatrick is a nonexecutive member of the Board of Directors of American International Group, Inc.

Chairman of The Geneva Association and Chairman of the Board of Management, Munich Re, Dr. Nikolaus von Bomhard made the announcement, noting that Fitzpatrick “brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to The Geneva Association. His background in insurance management, financial management and leadership will be hugely valuable in taking the Association to the next stage of its development as the leading global research and outreach organization of the insurance industry.”

Fitzpatrick described the Association as a “unique and highly influential organization with a distinguished history and an exciting future.” He also pointed out that “our industry plays a vital economic role in society and represents a key private sector counterparty to support governments and society in tackling the challenges of today and tomorrow—not least helping economies recover after large insured events, contributing to financial stability and coping with the effects of global ageing and climate change. I look forward to leading the Association’s work to highlight and further this economic and societal contribution on behalf of its membership and the industry as a whole.”

Fitzpatrick succeeds Patrick M. Liedtke who has been Secretary General and Managing Director of The Geneva Association since January 2001, following his resignation to pursue other interests.

Von Bomhard thanked Liedtke for “his exemplary contribution and personal commitment for more than a decade. He has led the transformation of The Geneva Association into a leading insurance research organisation and voice for our industry on the international stage. We understand his decision to resign after 12 years of faithful service and wish him well for the future.”
