The most recent bulletin from the National Hurricane Center in Miami confirms that tropical storm Chris has strengthened into a “category one hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale,” the first of the present season.
Hurricane Chris was located about 625 miles (1005 kms) southeast of Cape Race Newfoundland as of 11:00 AST. Maximum sustained winds were around 75 mph (120 km/h) with higher gusts.
The hurricane is “moving toward the northeast near 20 mph (32 km/h),” the NHC reported. “A turn toward the north is expected later today, followed by a turn toward the northwest and west with a decrease in forward speed on Friday.”
Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 kms) from the center, and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 kms). Chris is expected to weaken over the next 48 hours, and at present poses no threat to any land area.
