Catlin Names Huebel CEO of Canadian Unit, Other Executive Changes

June 28, 2012

The Bermuda-based Catlin Group Limited announced that David Huebel will take over as CEO of Catlin Canada, effective July 3. Catlin Canada is the Group’s Canadian underwriting hub, headquartered in Toronto with offices in Calgary, Montreal and Vancouver. Catlin Canada’s gross premiums written amounted to US$112 million in 2011.

Huebel will succeed Mike Hansen, “who will continue as the global leader of Catlin’s Aerospace Product Group, which generates more than US$400 million in annual gross premiums written,” said the bulletin. Hansen has held the dual roles of CEO of Catlin Canada and global leader of the Aerospace Product Group since 2008. He will remain a Director of Catlin Canada and will continue to be based in Toronto.

Catlin also announced that Greg Joyce will succeed Huebel in July as chief underwriting officer of Catlin Canada. He had previously been Catlin Canada’s deputy chief underwriting officer.

In addition, Deborah Moor will join Catlin Canada in September as chief operating officer, a new position. She most recently served as president of Lloyd’s Canada.

Group CEO Stephen Catlin indicated that Huebel would continue “building on the strong infrastructure” established by Hansen, who would now “turn his sole focus to continuing to expand Catlin’s global Aerospace underwriting portfolio, which includes Airline, General Aviation, Airport, Aviation Products and Space/Satellite-related coverages. Aerospace is an increasingly important part of Catlin’s business, and it now deserves Mike’s full-time attention.”

Catlin also welcomed Joyce and Moor to the company, noting that Catlin has “assembled a strong management team to lead the continued growth of the Group’s Canadian operations, and I am pleased that Mike Hansen will continue to serve as a director of Catlin Canada.”

Huebel joined Catlin Canada in 2009 as chief underwriting officer. He began his career in 1987 at Gerling Global General Insurance Company (now RSA), where he held various management roles. He became president and CEO in 2005. His international experience included time in Mexico, where he served as acting manager for Gerling de Mexico over a two-year period. He was also treasurer of Gerling Nafta and spent considerable time in the United States, where he was involved in the successful reorganization of Gerling America.

Hansen joined Catlin in London in 2002 to help establish the Group’s presence in the Aviation insurance market. In 2004 he had assumed overall responsibility for Catlin’s worldwide Aviation portfolio. He was promoted to business group leader for Aerospace in January 2006. He relocated to Calgary in August 2006 to establish a new Catlin Canada office, while retaining his responsibility for Catlin’s global Aerospace underwriting operations. In September 2008 Hansen was appointed as CEO of Catlin Canada based in Toronto.

Joyce joined Catlin in 2008 as product manager-Energy Insurance and was promoted to deputy chief underwriting officer in 2010. Prior to joining Catlin, Greg spent 17 years at GCAN (now RSA). During his time at GCAN he held several positions which culminated in his appointment to vice president/manager-Western Region in 2006. In 2008, he assumed the additional responsibility of national practice Leader-Energy Insurance.

Moor has worked for Lloyd’s of London since 2001 and has been president of Lloyd’s Canada in Toronto since 2008. She previously served as head of internal regulatory projects and head of investor relations and ratings in London. Before joining Lloyd’s she served as director of insurance and director of product planning for Canadian Airlines.
