Canopius Group Limited announced that Susan Patschak, Chief Executive Officer of Canopius Bermuda has decided to step down, effective May 31, 2013, as she has decided to “assume a new role within the US insurance industry.”
The group announced that Stephen Hartwig, Senior Vice President, Canopius Underwriting Bermuda Limited (CUBL), has been named as Patschak’s successor, “subject to the necessary regulatory consents.”
Hartwig has led the Excess Casualty underwriting team at CUBL since 2008 and played an important part in the development of Canopius’ growing presence in Bermuda. He started his career in 1991 as an underwriting account manager with The Travelers Insurance Companies in the US, gaining experience with Fortune 1000 accounts. In 1994 he moved to Denmark, completing his MBA at the Copenhagen Business School, before joining GE Frankona Re where he developed his skills in casualty underwriting and underwriting management with a focus on casualty business from the US, Nordic region and Germany as well as global clients. In 2001 he moved to Bermuda to join Starr Excess as Assistant Vice President, Excess Casualty. He joined ACE Bermuda Insurance in 2004 as Vice President and team leader of their Excess Liability division. He moved to Canopius Bermuda in 2008 to establish and lead the Excess Casualty team.
