September 23, 2015

Markel International, the specialist insurer, has appointed Hu Qianhai to head its business in the People’s Republic of China, based in Shanghai.

Markel has had a presence in China since 2011, when it opened a representative office in Beijing and announced earlier this year that it plans to offer a local solution for Chinese insurers seeking to purchase treaty and facultative reinsurance. Capacity will be provided by Markel’s Syndicate 3000 at Lloyd’s and written through the Lloyd’s China platform.

Reporting to Matthew Cannock, principal officer & managing director of Markel Asia Pacific, Mr. Hu will lead the Markel team in China with the aim of providing on the ground local solutions for Chinese insurers.

William Stovin, president of Markel International said: “Qianhai has a proven ability to grow businesses in the competitive Chinese insurance market. We are confident that he will successfully use these skills to develop our Lloyd’s China-based reinsurance business. He is well connected and respected in the Chinese insurance marketplace and is an important appointment for us as we continue to develop our interests in the People’s Republic.”

Prior to joining Markel, Mr. Hu held a number of senior positions in the insurance industry. He founded Huatai Property & Casualty’s special risks unit with ACE and was responsible for successfully growing the business of Huatai Property & Casualty Insurance.

Mr. Hu was educated at and graduated from the Central University of Finance & Economics in Beijing, where he majored in international insurance.
