Tropical Storm Koppu, which formed Tuesday in the Pacific Ocean, is heading west in a direction that may bring it ashore in the northern Philippines later this week.
The system is forecast to continue its track west through Oct. 16 and then grind to a near halt as it strengthens to become a typhoon, according to Weather.com. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center’s forecast track for the storm has it making landfall in the northern Philippines over the weekend.
“Koppu is likely to become even stronger this weekend,” Weather.com said in a report Tuesday. “It may become the equivalent of a major hurricane.”
Koppu is the 24th named storm of the 2015 typhoon season, Weather.com said. Parts of the Philippines, Taiwan and Japan face damaging winds, floods and heavy rain, according to AccuWeather Inc.
