RSA Appoints Stewart as Chief Risk Officer for UK and Western Europe

London-based RSA has appointed Doug Stewart to the new role of chief risk officer for the UK and western Europe.

Stewart will be responsible for the governance of significant risks to the UK and Western European businesses, including strategic, insurance, reputational, operational and financial risk.

He will join the company on March 1, 2016 as part of the UK and executive team, reporting to William McDonnell, RSA Group chief risk officer.

Stewart joins RSA from Deloitte, where he spent seven years as risk director for its financial services practice. Prior to his tenure at Deloitte, he was expert adviser to the Council of Europe’s Member State Anti-Corruption program (2008 – 2009). Between 1997 and 2002, he was risk manager, financial services, at Arthur Andersen.

RSA said that Stewart “brings significant risk management experience from the insurance, retail banking and regulatory sectors, and will ensure that RSA continues to enhance the operational effectiveness of its risk oversight and control assurance processes across the UK and Western Europe.”

Commenting on the appointment, McDonnell said:

“In addition to bringing extensive and practical experience of operating and enhancing risk and control frameworks across different sectors, his experience of delivering and assuring major change programs will be invaluable as we continue to transform our business.

Steve Lewis, CEO of RSA UK and Western Europe, added:

“Doug is a great addition to the UK and Western European team and I look forward to working with him to further strengthen RSA’s risk management capabilities. Never before has the role of chief risk officer been so important. Doug’s oversight will play a key role in ensuring that we continue to deliver the best outcomes for our customers in a well-controlled, proportionate and sustainable way.”
