Wouldn’t they rather report to HR or an officer bound to confidentiality over reporting to colleagues? One would think the associated stigma is worse than losing a career. And bringing down a plane with a career is so much worse. There should be a system whereby certain conditions are automatically reported to HR in specified industries.
And perhaps there should be a readmission means for the pilot/co-pilot that can bypass the impenetrable requirement.
