The Philippines is bracing for a new storm that will hit the Southeast Asian nation this weekend, days after Typhoon Molave left at least 16 people dead and thousands in evacuation sites.
Goni, which developed into a severe tropical storm, is expected to further intensify as it enters Philippine waters late Thursday, the nation’s weather bureau said. It will bring heavy rains in central and southern Luzon starting Friday.
Typhoon Molave killed at least 16 people and affected more than a million more, with 300,000 fleeing their homes. Before heading to Vietnam, the 17th typhoon to enter the Philippines damaged nearly 1.5 billion pesos of crops and destroyed 23,500 houses, according to authorities.
An average of 20 cyclones pass through disaster-prone Philippines every year. The government in May said storms are likely to complicate the nation’s fight against the coronavirus as it evacuates tens of thousands of people from typhoon-hit areas.
