Oklahoma Trucker Wins Great American’s 2010 ‘Big Rig Giveaway’

A single dad from Oklahoma is the latest winner of the “Big Rig Giveaway,” sponsored by Cincinnati, Ohio-based Great American Insurance Group. Ron Terrill was on the road driving for a national motor carrier when he learned he had won a Volvo VNL 780.

“I missed my exit after they called me,” Terrill admitted several days after his big win. He is an independent owner-operator who drives a five-state delivery route for Great Wide, which, coincidentally, is insured by Great American. “I’m just one of those guys who works hard and that’s it. I’ve never won anything before in my life.”

Terrill, a trucker with 20 years experience, had heard of the “Big Rig Giveaway” but never entered the contest before. He signed up online only after he found out the 2010 rig was a Volvo.

“I like Volvos,” he said. “I really like the style of the new ones.” The “Big Rig Giveaway” has awarded previous winners with Freightliner, Peterbilt and Kenworth rigs.

Terrill called Great American the day after his name was chosen at random from over 6,000 entries. “I asked them if this was a dream. I couldn’t believe it at first. I’m just very grateful,” he said.

The Choctaw resident has two children and two grandchildren. He’ll take possession of his new truck in late April.

The “Big Rig Giveaway” is sponsored by the Trucking Division of Great American Insurance Group, which provides insurance products for the long-haul trucking industry that specializes in service to independent owner-operators.
