A Lincoln, Neb., insurance agent was sentenced to jail for perjury just a few days after winning a third term on a natural resources district board.
Larry Hall, 68, was sentenced to 45 days in jail and ordered to pay $1,000 for lying under oath during a lawsuit over the sale of his former company, The Lincoln Journal Star reported.
Hall pleaded no contest to the perjury charge in July. He had been accused of making false statements under oath during the legal dispute over the 2007 sale of his company, Associated Insurance Managers, to the McCashland-Kirby Insurance Agency.
Hall is in the midst of bankruptcy, his insurance license is under review, and he owes an insurance company that bought his former company more than $55,000.
Hall plans to serve out his term on the NRD board, but he’ll have to miss the Nov. 28 meeting because he started serving his jail sentence on Nov. 9.
Lancaster County Judge Gale Pokorny said the transcripts from the lawsuit that led to the charge against Hall showed that he lied repeatedly to protect his own interests.
“Mr. Larry Hall makes a mockery of our system of justice and a lesser sentence herein would depreciate, indeed condone his conduct,” Pokorny wrote in his sentencing order.
The legal dispute centered on Hall’s lack of compliance with the terms of the sale of his former company. McCashland-Kirby sued Hall for allegedly violating a term of the sale prohibiting him from selling to his former customers for four years.
Hall continued to sell policies to some of his former customers while that lawsuit was being argued. In late 2011, a judge entered a permanent order barring Hall from selling to his former customers and ordering him to pay McCashland-Kirby more than $55,000.
Hall says he has been in compliance with the judge’s orders and continues selling policies to new customers.
Hall told the Lincoln Journal Star that he wanted to run for re-election to the Lower Platte South Natural Resources District board because it is a passion of his.
