I hope the author meant to say they were using fall protection improperly, not that they were improperly using fall protection. I think it is proper to use fall protection. They just should do it properly.

first off i think those kind of fine are meaningless, the company just has to close up shop for 5 days in most places and start under a new name. second i have seen osha at work !! they sit and record every little thing. a company i had working for me got fined $15,000 for a guy not using the fall protetion when setting up the “fall protection system”. then fined $5000 for not securing the ladder to the roof after being ordered by osha to get off the ladder.
we all want everyone to be safe and work safely and we all know we have to do some dangerous things osha just makes it that much harder to perform our jobs, stop work, huge fines, loss of work, and the goverment thinks its ok to fine a guy $1000 dollars for walking in a puddle (my only violation ever) “there was no cation tape warning of a dangerous/life threating liquid on the ground”
(and the inspector walked though it when leaving, wheres his fine)
lets get people back to work in this country and have big brother stop looking to make money off us. they are worse than the mob!!

Steve – You hit the nail on the head (sorry, I couldn’t help myself). Why not steel tipped gloves, to make sure no one gets an owie. Really, the government has gone too far, and OSHA is simply a money making machine. Safety, is not there real concern.

I worked in factory that had an OSHA inspection. The factory was fined a ton of money because people had their safety glasses off while on break (away from the machines, but still inside the building). The second huge fine came from newspapers being on a lunch table, well over 100 feet from the work area, but OSHA said it was close enough to the welders to be considered a hazard. Total mob mentality. You have no recourse to argue the fines, especially if you are a large company.

You can appeal the fines. I’ve had several clients get them reduced by more than half. It’s worth the headache.

when you have a goverment organization running itself with the fines collected without a proper oversight and getting larger everyday guess who has to pay for all this in the name of safety. if they are concern about safety they have to stop the employee working on the roof if not safe. but they are more concern about the documentation they let him continue to work until they have all the evidence gathered such as calling in to his supervisor and taking pictures.

I had no idea that metal roofs can be dangerous in some cases due to natural disaster since the storm and wind which are so powerful could rip off any type of shingles. But honestly metal roofing is a lot sturdier than its non-metal counterparts, and an exterior coating was good option for durability.
