The state says recent stepped-up enforcement of seat belt regulations by law enforcement officials in 40 Michigan counties led to more than 13,700 traffic stops.
Preliminary reports released June 23 indicate that stops during the “Click It Or Ticket” campaign May 19 to June 2 resulted in more than 7,700 seat belt and child restraint citations. There were more than 9,100 such citations issued during a similar effort last year.
Officers made 41 drug arrests, nearly 30 alcohol-related arrests and 24 other felony arrests. More than 1,220 tickets were written for suspended licenses and uninsured motorists. During one stop in Ottawa County, a person was arrested for three felony warrants.
The federally-supported effort included the Memorial Day weekend effort and involved local police, sheriff’s offices and state police.
