Michigan Rail Project to Eliminate Dangerous Crossing

July 7, 2015

Officials say a project to extend a rail line in a DTE Energy Co. rail yard in suburban Detroit, Mich. is designed to improve safety and traffic flow.

Work begins July 13 in Trenton. The yard holds trains delivering coal to the Detroit-based utility’s Trenton Channel Power Plant.

DTE says the track extension will allow longer trains to be held in the yard, eliminating about 12 train shipments over the course of a year. An aim is to reduce the number of times drivers will have to wait at railroad crossings for trains.

The project also will eliminate a crossing described as dangerous on Toledo Avenue over CSX railroad tracks at Hoover Street. The rail crossing was recommended for removal by the Michigan Department of Transportation in 2003.
