How can such a thing happen in an area with strict gun control laws? Oh I forgot gun control only matters for those who obey the law. I say lock up the criminals who use guns and throw away the key to the cell, we could release all of the non violent marijuana possessors and have plenty of room to keep the truly violent threats away from our society.

The answer to your question is Indiana. The Indiana state line is about 30 minutes from the South side of Chicago. The criminals go to Indiana (where they have few gun control laws), buy the guns and come back to their neighborhoods where they shoot people in their community. This is why we need stricter, uniform federal gun control laws. Nobody is saying nobody can own a gun, but we are saying that you shouldn’t be able to drive to a gun show in Indiana, buy an AR-15 without a background check and drive back to Chicago to shoot your neighbors.

        Sally Ann,
Exactly how than do you propose for this new federal law to make the situation better? In the case of the criminal element they do not obey the laws already on the books so what new law or set there of do you propose to make the situation better? I am far from an expert on state by state crime statistics but if guns are truly the problem then why is crime not sky high in states like Texas and AZ which have very loose laws in regards to law abiding citizens purchasing fire arms?

The problem Ms. Fannymaker is gang violence pure and simple and until we treat today’s gangs as criminal enterprises no different than Al Capone and the NY Crime families the blood will continue to flow in the streets of Chicago.

The solution is fairly simple allow for the law to prosecute anyone who is affiliated with these criminal enterprises and get them off the streets.

Oh but that will not work because then we will impact the right of free speech because just being a gang banger is not enough you have to catch the scum in the act of a crime.

The second amendment to the constitution is there for one reason only to protect the citizenry from tyranny so if we are going to impact anyone’s rights how about the criminal first?

One final thing on this matter is that the number of crimes committed with long guns such as the AR 15 is so low in comparison to hand guns that I wonder why you even mention the AR15 in your comment. As to going to Indiana to purchase a gun, first the Illinois resident would be required to have a FOI card from IL and then they can only legally purchase from a federal firearms liscensed dealer (FFL) a long gun. Indiana law does not allow for the transfer of a handgun to a non Indiana resident directly. That transfer would have to go through a FFL in the purchasers home state.

Although there are some private sellers at most gun shows the vast majority of sellers in my experience are FFL’s and they are required by federal law to run a background check for all sales at the show just like their store. Further if an individual is engaged in the business of selling firearms they are required to obtain a FFL and go through all of the paperwork process as well.

I am not so stupid to think that there are not some who go around the laws but what difference does is make if a criminal obtains a weapon at a gun show or out of a car trunk in an alley, the result is the same and unless we as a nation are willing to give up all rights to keep and bear arms then you will never stop the criminal from obtaining weapons. Prime example is the Mexican drug cartels it is illegal for most citizens there to own a firearm but son of a gun (pun intended) they still thumb their nose at the law and obtain weapons.

It would help that there were no guns for the criminals to steal. Saint Louis is pretty busy and a smaller city and guns for all to buy. Gun running..eh??

Yes, no guns. Then the mentally ill can drive trucks or use swords like they do in European cities.
We do not have a gun problem we have a mental ill problem.

      David,
Is it possible we have both? It doesn’t have to be one or the other, the two problems can coexist.

1 in 10 arrested on gun violence charges in Chicago are kept behind bars. 1 In 10. The judges that release the others have blood on their hands. Period.

This is very sad to read about the loss of a very talented and accomplished. I do have to wonder if he was targeted while driving as black in a predominately white town.

Mr Allen was not shot in Naperville, which is a wealthy suburb, but in the west side of Chicago, in a bad part of town. Get your facts straight. http://homicides.suntimes.com/victims/ronald-l-allen

4247 people shot in Chicago Jan 1 to Dec 21 2016 this year, Up from 2989 for the whole of last year. http://crime.chicagotribune.com/chicago/shootings/

Don’t blame it on Indiana, Chicago owns this one. Gang violence and no regard for any life.

Very sad story, it keeps playing out each and every day in Chicago.

Celtica: Do you really think white people were out hunting this man down?! He was shot and killed in N. Austin which has one of the highest homicide rates in Chicago and it is 85% black vs. 4% white. Great assumption!!

Ryan, Being shot while driving as black is not exactly a new crime. Hate crimes are up since Trump announced he was running. Now that he is president elect, the element of the population who are racist (and I am not saying all his voters are), they may be more likely to act out more than before.

Celtica is a racist person looking to blame the white man for a crime in a predominately democrat city and state. There has to be another reason other than the lawlessness created by the democrat leaders in the city and state. Blame the white Republican and Trump. Next celtica will accuse Mr. Trump of pulling the trigger after he molested his kids.

This is a sad story for all to read about a man who truly believed in giving back to his community, Ron Allen! The reasons I know Ron Allen will be missed by Minority Business Owners is because he tried to communicate as often as possible locally and nationally on how to survive as a Insurance Agency Owner. Ron was a pioneer in the area of supporting minority owned business owners and attempting them to establish professional associations to support one another. God Bless Ron Allen and his family, and yes we will miss Ron Allen !
