A new report from State Farm says that Illinois and Missouri were among the top states in the nation for hail damage in 2018, according to a new report from State Farm.
Illinois ranks third with $330 million in paid hail damage and 24,000 hail-related insurance claims in 2018. Missouri is fifth with more than $88 million in paid damage and 10,000 claims.
Colorado tops the list nationally, with nearly $600 million in damage and 67,000 claims. Texas was next with $437 million in damage. Rhode Island had the mildest year for hail, with only one hail claim in 2018.
Positive news in the report is a pronounced drop in hail claims and damages across the nation in 2018. Overall, State Farm reported that hail-related claims were down 36 percent from the prior year, resulting in a 31 percent drop in paid hail damages. But hail remains a significant peril, with State Farm paying more than $2.7 billion for auto and home hail claims in 2018.
If homeowners experience hail damage, State Farm recommends making temporary home repairs to prevent further damage, and to keep receipts as related expenses (repairs, food, temporary housing) may be reimbursed through homeowners policies.
The insurer also recommends preventative measures such as moving vehicles under cover, properly pruning trees, and installing impact-resistant roofing.
