Farmers are simply a political pawn. Trump is holding them hostage until we get closer to the 2020 campaign. He will then strike an amazing deal; a deal which will be no different than before and without any concessions for money, land, families and lives lost. Yes, I said lives. The suicide rate in the farming community is skyrocketing and no one is listening.

Can’t stand the President doing the right thing on trade? He won on NAFTA and with Canada. He is winning on China. No more having one way trade deals. Sorry if that offends.

2+ years in and not one new trade deal has been implemented.

In fact, the trade deficit is at a historic high. Funny thing is that is was declining prior to the tariffs taking effect.

What a silly comment. The trade deficit is growing because products are not made in single countries anymore. Most cars have parts from all over the world; when American car companies are crushing it, like right now, they have to import tons of parts, increasing the trade deficit.

The US economy is the envy of the world right now (again), and investors are pouring money into the United States, which won’t show up in any trade deficit figures.

Manufacturing jobs have grown under Trump after falling during 8 years of Whats His Name.

And yes, Trump finished the new trade deal with Mexico and today this week China announced more liberalized rules for foreign banks (meaning US banks) to operate in China.

Trump is crushing it and the trade deficit is a result, a good thing, not a bad thing.
In fact, the global economy is slowing and what happened recently? Our trade deficit shrank.

President Trump told us that the tariffs would reduce the trade deficit. It has not.

The US economy has been the envy of the world for many decades. President Obama inherited the largest economy in the world and no country ever surpassed it. have you noticed that GDP growth slowed down the last 2 quarters?

Manufacturing jobs have increased every year since the beginning of 2010. It was under President GW Bush that they took a dive.

Do you know hat the term “implemented” means?

We’ll have to wait to see the results in the next year and a half.

If Tramp is “winning the trade war”, I’d hate to see what losing looks like. Here in Iowa, farmers are mad as hell they can’t move their grain like they used to. Most are sticking with Orange Julius, because they are blindly partisan and believe the Emperor’s clothes look fantastic. Boy, are they secretly thanking Obama for Dennis Rodmaning the economy! (actually, not all that secret, most are willing to admit that the economy did indeed rebound pretty well under the previous administration – could have even better if not for obstruction at its finest)

Well, they voted for him and are now reaping what they sowed (pun intended). It used to be that trade and farm policy were a matter left to the legislators from those districts. But now all decisions are left to the whim of the white house. the white house used to be the white knight but no longer. It would help if that guy had some prior knowledge or experience in governing but it is too late now for that. He’ll offer something with one hand and take it away with the other. If agriculture is not supported, we’ll be a net importer of food. Who cares if we are the world’s biggest exporter of oil? You can eat oil. When farmers go under, so will the rest of us.

@Stush: which will happen first?: Earth dies due to Global Warming, or Farms collapse & no food is produced?

You Americans need to grow up and realise nations can survive while importing food.

America is not the only place that grows food you know. Never has been, never will be.

For once in your lives, you may have to go cap in hand to the rest of the world asking to buy food from them for ayear or so.

And they may well say you must cut back your military adventurism if you wish your people to be fed.

The rest of the world will cheer if that deal is struck.

I hear they were getting because of the tariffs and now for the flooding. Why are we giving so much aid to these businessmen? If a business fails, no one is going to bail them out. Farming is a business. Plus, these farmers should have gotten alot from the tax cuts passed by Trump and the Republiican party. I don’t see why I (a taxpaper) should provide handouts like this.

The one farmer who lost his corn in silos to flooding says he dropped his flood insurance after having it for years to save money. Sad, tragic situation, but of his own making. If you are near a flood prone area or a river, you really need to keep up that insurance.

“And he is worried that President Donald Trump may not be able to strike a trade deal…”

It all depends. He is great at striking deals with pornstars. Maybe farmers just need to diversify their trade. Become a pornstar, have an alleged affair with Tramp, get a deal struck.

Nope. It isn’t contingent ( it doesn’t all depend ). Trump negotiated the USMCA almost a year ago. And he did the same on the new tax code, funding the Wall, etc.

The trade war is not just over commodities. You have countries which see no problem with stealing elaborate and very valuable trade secrets. You can’t just run a country for one industry. The crop production in this country is extremely important, yet the throttle can be pulled back 10-15% and we wouldn’t even notice. A lot of this ground should be put in PIK or other set asides, or back into hay and pasture. There also should be some common sense oversight of the dairy farm industry, which has propagated very large cow factories to the demise of the family dairy farmer. This is true with hogs as well. These CAFOs as they are called, add risk for eco terrorism and out- of- control pollution situations, whereas the family farms spread out that risk across the land.
