Iowa Agent Charged with Insurance Fraud

An Iowa insurance agent has been charged with one count each of Insurance Fraud (Class D Felony), Fraudulent Sales Practices – Over $10,000 (Class C Felony), Theft – 2nd degree (Class D Felony), Fraudulent Practices – 2nd Degree (Class D Felony) and Forgery (Aggravated Misdemeanor), the Iowa Insurance Division announced.

The charges faced by 35-year-old Adam Hocking, sole owner of Adam Hocking & Associates II Inc. in Windsor Heights, Iowa, are the result of an investigation by the Iowa Insurance Division’s Fraud Bureau which began in December 2019.

In criminal complaints filed by the Iowa Insurance Division’s Fraud Bureau, it is alleged Hocking created fictitious insurance policies and documents for clients, and accepted payments for the same, when no such policies existed. These actions resulted in Iowa consumers being left uninsured when they attempted to file a claim as a result of a loss.

On Oct. 5, 2020, Hocking entered into an Order and Consent to Order with the Iowa Insurance Division’s Enforcement Bureau. The order requires Hocking to pay a $3,000 penalty and $55,000 in restitution.

Details of the order may be found here: https://iid.iowa.gov/documents/enforcement-orders-and-actions/in-the-matter-of-adam-hocking-and-adam-hocking-associates.

On Nov. 6, 2020, Hocking was arrested in West Des Moines and booked into the Polk County Jail. Hocking was later released after posting a $27,000 bond. Trial will be set for a future date.

Note: A criminal charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
