Tesla has expanded its own brand of auto insurance into Ohio, using real-time driving behavior for Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y owners.
Ohio joins Texas, Arizona, Illinois and California as states where Tesla Insurance is live. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said last year that the company will “aspirationally” roll out its auto insurance program across most of the country this year.
Tesla Insurance is underwritten in Ohio through State National Insurance Co., based in Texas.
Tesla began offering auto insurance in California in 2019. According to the Tesla Insurance website, the coverage provides Tesla vehicle owners “with up to 20% lower rates, and in some cases, as much as 30%.” Tesla says its insurance covers physical damage, bodily injury and liability as well as additional financial protection against theft of the car, and damage to the car for events other than traffic collisions.
Tesla Insurance also offers an Autonomous Vehicle Protection Package, which includes “Autonomous Vehicle Owner Liability, Wall Charger Coverage, Electronic Key Replacement, and covers Cyber Identity Fraud Expenses.”
