The Alliance of American Insurers is expressing pleasure at the progress of state legislatures in acting upon the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) model producer licensing law so early in the new year.
In New England, “the Massachusetts Legislature has shown commendable willingness to take action to modernize the insurance business in its state,” said Frank O’Brien, New England regional manager for the Alliance of American Insurers. “In addition, the Vermont Legislature appears poised to act.”
The Massachusetts House Ways and Means Committee approved an amended version of HB 28 Jan. 15. The bill is based upon the NAIC model producer licensing law. In addition, we are optimistic that the Vermont Legislature will act on a similar bill, HB 186, shortly. That measure already has been approved by the Vermont House.
According to Alliance Vice President Rey Becker, “We already have 36 states that have enacted the model, the most recent being Michigan. Another four have at least taken steps to promote producer-licensing reciprocity.
“The Alliance is committed to working with state insurance departments and legislators to bring the remaining 11 states along. We are optimistic about our chances for this year in New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Tennessee.”
