Zurich North America Implements New Initiative for Underwriting

November 6, 2002

As part of its strategy to further enhance underwriting quality, Zurich North America is implementing a new corporatewide initiative to build underwriting workstations for its core lines of business – property, casualty, auto and general liability.

The online platforms are designed to connect Zurich North America underwriters across the target markets they serve – large corporations, middle market companies, small businesses, group service providers and businesses needing specialized coverages – and enforce a consistent underwriting discipline and focus throughout the organization.

Earlier this year, Zurich North America completed the companywide rollout of the first of these workstations – a property underwriting platform for its largest accounts – on which the other underwriting workstations will be modeled. The workstation is component-based, allowing underwriters to access new features as they are installed, including tools for catastrophe modeling, pricing, risk selection, location and building valuation, risk engineering, reinsurance, claims and customer relationship management. Currently used to underwrite property risk for large companies, the workstation is also being expanded to include Zurich North America’s other property markets.

The workstation model allows Zurich North America to capture and house its best underwriting practices in one accessible location. It also enables Zurich North America underwriters to access the data they need from internal and external sources at any time; easily communicate and collaborate with risk engineering, claims and field offices; and share knowledge from anywhere in the organization.

Zurich North America plans to use the workstations to connect with external business partners, including customers, brokers, agents and reinsurers.
