Your estimates are bass ackwards. Ivan destroyed 7 oil platforms before coming ashore. Did you count those? If I owned an oil platform, I WOULD DEFINATELY HAVE IT INSURED!!!

Ivan layed destruction in just about every state east of the Mississippi river. Yet you feel Ivan was the least destructive of the four hurricanes.

WHAT MIND HULLUCINATING DRUGS ARE YOU ON? I’ll bet they are pretty good.

Who speaks for the dozens of people still “unaccounted for” from Ivan? Ivan victims need most of the help.

    Good day to you.

Well Jon and B.C., your opinion’s duely noted.(no pun intended) But, what causes me not to relax is that there is nothing left of my Great Uncle’s house except a slab of concrete. He lived across the bay from Pensacola in Baldwin County. I have not been able to contact him as yet, but am concerned about “depretiation” claims from Insurance companies. When a disaster happens, IC’s pay out according to the value of the house after it is damaged. A 2-story beauty is now a slab of concrete. Paying many years of insurance can add up to a little more than a six pack and candy bar.

    Um, Relax.

Note the word ‘estimate’ and ‘exceed’.

Professional demeanor is not a strong point of these boards. Then again, neither is spelling, nor the Caps Lock button.

I agree. I don’t really care about the accuracy of the numbers. Insurance companies are fulfilling their insuring agreement to the insured like crazy. I hope that these hurricanes have caused people to wake up from their slumber. It is unfortunate that people sacrifice spending money on insurance to protect their families and investments for a six pack for themselves and a candy bar for their child.

I regret your Uncle’s loss. Hopefully he is ok, and doing well.

Give the company time to work the claim, then if they obviously undervalue the home, he can file a complaint, and you can voice your opposition.

This industry is frequently given a bad image before it even gets the chance to respond to calamities.

Michael, I sure do understand your concern for your uncle and hopefully he chose a good insurance agent that took the time to properly insure the house. Homeowners policies in the state of Florida must be written with replacement cost on the dwelling. The question is, did the agent properly figure the replacement cost when the policy was written? I’ve been in the insurance industry since 1976 and for the most part, the company will bend over backwards to be fair. There are cases when it seems like the company couldn’t care less, but that’s the exception that the news media dwells on and not the rule. They report on 2 or 3 incidents that are negative instead of the thousands that are positive. It’s hard to see now, but in some ways, your uncle’s situation is better than someone who only had half their house damaged. When the house is gone, generally speaking, the company will pay the limit on the policy to have the house rebuilt. It’s when there’s partial damage that it can get really crazy.

Please know that I am praying every day for the victims of these hurricanes and specifically in the area of insurance settlements, that the settlements will be done as quickly as possible and in all fairness to the insured. I don’t have any answers to why these things happen, but I know the God of the universe cares deeply for the people that are hurting. :-)
