Insurance is fun? I think NOT. I seem to always get canned by adding a little fun to my casualty u/w. Seems like the slogan should be, “can my underwriter really be in Calcutta India?” How come my underwriter always ask me to hold on a minute while he drives his taxi? I don’t know, unless the industry turns profitable, there will be no fun.
P.S. Fun could be thinking of constructive ways to exclude hurricane exposures and get a premium increase to boot.

Instead of complaining about the industry (whic by the way is what agents do best) try taking a different approach.

Wow, Get Real got out of wrong side of the bed and ate is Grouchio’s today. I have been in the insurance business for 15 years and still love coming to work. I look at the problem accounts as challenges. Sure, there are days when you hate the clients and underwriters, but I think insurance is very challenging and rewarding if you are willing to put forth some effort. I would recommend to all college students to take an insurance course. I originally was going to be a CPA but decided it was too boring. I got into the insurance field by accident but I am happy I am in it now. There are always going to be some people who hate their jobs no matter what they are doing. I have seen some like that come and go from our office. You soon realize that these people are just miserable no matter where they go to work. Too bad for them. I would hate to get up everyday thinking how horrible it is going to be.

Chris, you and Pete are a breath of fresh air! I not only bought your book, but actually read it (and enjoyed it). Your columns take a “deadly” topic and make it memorable enough as an explanation trigger (last month’s contractual liabliity piece was priceless!).
As the Toyota dog ad parlayed several years ago, “Life’s a journey, enjoy the ride!”

Insurance IS fun – so is surety. Both clients and underwriters can discern the difference between those who enjoy what they do and those who don’t. Who wants to play with losers? It’s so much fun to defy the naysayers and accomplish what they said couldn’t be done. St. John’s Wort for everyone!

Hmmmmm! Fun eh? Chris’ articles ARE fun. Fun to read and fun to use as learning tools for people I teach. Insurance also used to be fun. Before the trust was broken between the carriers and the brokers and an adversarial relationship sprung up in it’s place. That was also before no one dared to make an underwriting decision for fear of their job. Now it seems u/w’s cringe everytime they have an opportunity. After 38 years the only fun left is to get together with like souls (or perhaps soles)and curmudgeon about the “good old days”.
    Bah humbug!

Well, at the very least I liked the Actuarial jokes. Some of the slogans are quite pithy.

Insurance, like any career is in the eye of the beholder. For those poor souls whose glass is not only half empty, but also contains the wrong beverage, my deepest sympathies.
For the rest of the crowd that strives everyday to bring greater value to their customers, carriers and employees, it should be fun! We spend more time at the office than waking hours at home. Thanks for a great way to add a lighter touch to our industry and time spent at work. I look forward to seeing where this idea is taken.

I love it …!!! We all need something to bring a smile to our faces … some days more than others. This may be just what the doctor ordered…. something about laughter is the best medicine …. I am a total believer in that prescription!!
