I\’m not a parent, but this doesn\’t really surprise me. I know I don\’t get enough sleep and I\’m 30! I\’ve always said that there is just too much pressure on kids to do so much.

I believe most adults still need 8 or 9 hours of sleep. Evidence: road rage, workplace low productivity, short tempers, etc.

As the mother of a teenager, I feel that part of the reason for their lack of sleep is 1) pressure to do well in school; 2) job; 3) extracurricular acitivities; 4) community service. And if they want to get any scholarships for college, they had better be doing all of these! Forget having a life, or getting enough sleep!

    This is so true!

My daughters\’ physicians both agree with the fact that teens need at LEAST 8-9 hours of sleep each night. There is so much competition now about having the \”best\” grades and being the \”best\” in sports (all brought on by the overly competative parents) it\’s no wonder why our kids are not getting enough rest and getting into more accidents. As parents, we have to back-off a bit.

I heard on the news yesterday that some schools (back east, I think?) have tried to change the \”start\” time to 9:00AM – this didn\’t work out too well since many parents were complaining that it wasn\’t convenient for them since they want to drop off the kids at school on their way to work – what a pity!! Maybe if we ease off of our kids a bit – they can be competative, but in a healthy way – they will be a bit more self-sufficient and independent. Maybe they will get more sleep!

    Tig-
When did you or your teen find the TIME to apply for the scholarships? It seems like you\’d have to hire someone as this can be a 9-5 job!!!! ;)

    Crunchmaster,
Not so – read between the lines. Better to educate the competative ignorant parents than to have the ignorant parents had over the car keys to Johnny or Suzie in the AM after they had only a few hours of sleep.

Guessing by your user name, crunchmaster, is this what you do for a living? Crunch numbers? Just curious! ;)
