Markel Names Jones General Counsel

Markel Corporation in Richmond, Va., has named D. Michael Jones senior vice president and general counsel. Jones brings over 25 years of broad-based legal experience to Markel. In his new role, Jones will support the senior executive team.

Prior to joining Markel Corporation, Jones was a partner at McGuireWoods LLP in Richmond. At McGuireWoods, he represented Markel Corporation in financing transactions and related securities registrations. He also counseled publicly held clients on compliance with federal regulations, such as those under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, and other corporate governance matters.

Previously, Jones spent 17 years at Reynolds Metals Company. He served in a variety of positions, including seven years as General Counsel.

Jones served as law clerk to Justice James G. Exum, Jr., of the North Carolina Supreme Court. Jones earned his J.D. with high honors from the University of North Carolina Law School, where he served as Note and Comment Editor for the North Carolina Law Review. He also holds a B.A. in English with highest honors from the University of North Carolina.
