Won\’t President Bush\’s plan create an incentive for employers to stop offering health insurance?

That\’s the way I read it. Employers will no longer be able to write off the expense, and will have to pay Fica taxes on the benefit along with the employee–that means a 15% reduction in what companies are giving to start with. I believe Bush\’s plan also penalizes companies depending on how much they give toward coverage. This will lead to an end of the Employer benefit and people will be left to search in the market by themselves instead of with a group. This is extremely beneficial to Healthy people, but don\’t ever get sick or actually try and see a Dr.

    Hi PK,
Yes, I agree with your comments. It is ironic that President Bush\’s proposal is anti corporate business and the Dems are laying out better solutions. BTW, if healthy people are going to benefit – it will only through self insurance (pay the docs full rate out of pocket)

I don\’t think it Ironic at all. The premise of conservatism is that one should pull themselves up by their own doing and if you can\’t that too bad and government should offer you nothing to help. Dems on the other hand realize that no one does it on their own and try to offer plans that benefit a broad spectrum of people and business. Unfortunately some government plans are extremely wasteful (like any bureaucratic institution). We just need to demand that our tax dollars are spent efficently by whoever is in controll.

Bush\’s Immigrant plan is Ironic. It solves many problems: Supplies temporary workers to businesses that need them. Gives them legal status so employers can\’t abuse them. And helps keep long-term employee wages up. But it won\’t pass because of the Republicans. That\’s Ironic.
