Wal-Mart Quietly Pulled Dog Treats But Didn’t Issue Recall

They’re not going to change practices until we stop buying the imported junk. They have a better profit margin selling this defective stuff even if they have to occasionally pull a product and pay-off a couple Plaintiffs here and there.

I’m not singling out Wal*Mart, it’s most retailers.

To be fair, American manufacturers (those that are left) have to get on the ball and start producing a quality item, American unions need to release the stranglehold on companies that’s forcing them to take jobs overseas… but none of that will matter if we’re just going to run out and buy the products off a garbage barge from China.

It’s getting harder and harder… especially to find a quality product as comparable prices.

I was recently in the market for a new road bicycle, I have several options available to me (Cannondale, Trek, Specialized, Giant, et al). I chose the Cannondale because it was still “Handmade in USA”. I paid a premium of about 10% to buy American but am proud to ride the last “professional grade” mass market bicycle still made in the US (to the best of my knowledge).

I just learned that even Cannondale will be exporting (at least the vast majority of) its manufacturing overseas in the next few years which will make my next decision more difficult.

There’s still American made products but more and more, companies realize noone cares about that label anymore (at least not as much as a Nike Swoosh label), few are willing to pay the premium for American made, and the profit margin far offset the minor loss of loyalty when they outsource.

I for one try as hard as possible to buy American products, avoid technology that has outsourced technical support, and support mom-and-pop brick-and-mortars when possible. But it’s becoming harder and harder when there’s no market to cater to -1% of the population willing to go the extra mile when the other 99% is happy to buy gobs of lead paint for their kids and wonder where all the manufacturing jobs have gone.

Union people who don’t try to find USA merchandise should be barred from striking, you’re cutting your own throats.

If Wal Mart thinks this is a bad enough problem to not sell the product, why not issue a recall? How many dogs dying does it take to issue a recall? I shop at Wal Mart and have no dogs so I don’t have a stake in this one way or another, but it seems odd not to issue a recall. This kind of thing should not be a secret.

If you own a store and someone said that their pet died because of this product, are you going to recall it on this on a handful of complaints? Was it the product that even killed the dog? We don’t know. I think that Wal-Mart took the correct appropriate steps. Take the product off of the shelf, test it and see if what killed the dog was actually the product. If so, then recall it. But you have to know what the problem is first before you solve it. I have two dogs and love them very much but I would want to know what killed them first before I do anything.

If retailers pulled items made in China from their shelves, the stores would be a WHOLE lot smaller than they are now. Probably could put everything on about 4 shelves & wouldn’t need all that retail space.

I don’t disagree with you on a recall. I just wonder why they were alarmed enough to stop selling the product, but not alarmed enough to issue a warning or recall. Fine line there I suppose. I still will shop at Wal Mart.

I don’t think a recall is necessary here. There is nothing wrong with taking preventative measures, but there is no reason to recall a product that is not defective.

Has no one has figured this out yet? The reason no recall has been issued is because THEN they’d have to refund the MONEY.

AS – You are right, money was one factor used in making the decision to remove the product from the shelf. Money is always a factor in any business decision. But again it comes down to, we don’t know what caused these dogs to become ill or even die. How many dogs are we even talking about that may have been affected by this product? That is one thing I would like to know, because it will give me a sense of how big this issue really is. But again, we still don’t know what the problem is. That is why they are testing the product.

China has responded to the critical media attention that it has been getting by reminding us that US business DEMANDS (Wal Mart?)low cost goods…..they have no choice but to cut corners.

Is that another way of saying you get what you pay for?

    Whenever possible Buy American!

WalMart is already telling people to bring the product back for a refund. There is still not recall, but I think WalMart is handling this properly.

Our pet Rosie, a 3 year old Chihuahua was poisoned from Chinese made
Bestro’s Jerky Chicken Strips #77849 00006 1 We have this contaminated
bag. We have three Chihuahuas and one of them died one month ago. She
started with vomiting and dehydration and then we were told she may either have an obstruction or have been poisioned. Since our dogs are inside dogs and we are with them at all times outside we thought it was an obstruction. Finally the doctor
said he was almost positive it was some kind of poisoning at Elwood Animal
Clinic in Glendora, California. They were going to scope her but before that
could happen she died July 21, at VCA in Fountain Valley, California.
We gave our dogs Waggin train and Bestro’s Jerky Chicken Strips. Our
Sweet Rosie (our chihuahua that passed) loved them and and she would eat all the
treats we put down for the other dogs too. Up until today we never had any idea
what happened but now with Wal Mart (I bought the treats there and at Sam’s) pulling this quietly from their selves. I truly believe that is why she died. We called Wal Mart and are getting a run around. We need help. I would like to find a website with other dog owners who may have experienced the same as we have. If you know of any please let us know. We are totally heartbroken and will never forget Our Sweet Gypsy Rose!

Since Wal Mart had this problem before, why didn’t they pull all that
Chinese junk off the first time? Our Rosie will still be alive! Is Wal Mart concerned about people and their Pets or Money? You figured it out.

The laws are not written to protect our pets & that’s just wrong! I agree & wonder what this world is coming to when we are so reliant on crap from China & then it sickens & kills our critters & sometimes us too!

Boycott China made foods, lotions, drinks, toothpaste, anything that can be absorbed into our skin or ingested. Better safe than sorry….
