they surely will come and expand. and the more you build the more expensive it will be. they wonder why insurance is so HIGH. there is big potential of a major loss. thankfully no major hurricanes hit the states over the last few years.

At least if there is an upside, Since everything gets washed away you can rebuild better and stronger. Of course the downside is that Miami will now be 20 miles inland.

At least you save money on tearing the buildings down

It’s really funny to consider the implications of the irregular multi-decadal Atlantic hurricane cycle on coastal building patterns.

During the later period of light years for Atlantic hurricanes, building accelerates on the coast, real estate values rise disproportionately, and there aren’t any problems for insurers in those areas — or much need for fiscal discipline from “insurers of last resort.”

Then the storms pick up for a decade or two. Companies get railroaded into staying in states like FL, the market hardens, when statutes sundown, suddenly the companies leave, building slows, real estate values tend to slow their increase … probably just in time for the light period to start again.

When the light period has proven itself, the big boys will want to get some of that profitable exposure again, come into the coastal markets with advertising and big appetites, and enjoy — maybe — a few years or a decade before the cycle picks up again. People, who have notoriously short memories, start once again relocating to the coastal paradises (well, compared to the cold and tax/theft-high northern states) of the southeast.

    Rinse, repeat.

The real money is probably to be made going against the crowd, but who has the testicular fortitude to do that?

Give it about 3 years, Global Warming will not be talked about anymore. Of course the left will credit themselves for thinking they have done something about it, reality is humans cannot have an effect on something that is much bigger than us.

Global warming is nothing be a crock of —-. From the liberal media and academia you can only readily hear their side of the story. There is plenty of real science that debunks their junk but very little of that is available to the masses. Where on the coastline there used to be swamps and sloughs and open spaces for the water and wind to go, it now sweeps over multi million dollar developments and displaces people and we talk about how much worse the hurricanes are and it must be global warming! Bull!

Green house gases, primarily produced by American SUVs, was causing Global Warming; right?
But now, ooops, it looks like global cooling is on its way. Sooooo; dosen’t that mean we need to drive our big American cars, boats & planes even more to prevent the earth from becomming a popsicle? “Come-on gang; lets make it a musical!” Algore and the UN is counting on us.

No no no, that would further exacerbate our dependence on foreign oil, and while we can’t drill in any new fields we certainly must reduce our dependence on foreign oil by driving solar powered cars and flying only in ethanol powered jumbo jets. It’s for the children.

um…..and Al Gore supposedly invented the internet….if you look into the past, global warming is like the cycles of the weather…they have proof of that from the core samples from ice and from solid beds of rock…this planet has been through the ice ages and global warming before…

back then, we did not have cars and this much growth – so why are we so panicing now?

i agree, we do need to be careful…but if we stop tearing down rainforests, we might have the plants do their thing. we currently do not have anything mechanically that can replace what they do naturally.

And I’ll keep this world from draggin me down
    gonna stand my ground
    … and I won’t back down

    Chorus:
    (I won’t back down…)
Hey baby, there ain’t no easy way out
    (and I won’t back down…)
hey I will stand my ground
    and I won’t back down

Well I know what’s right, I got just one life
in a world that keeps on pushin me around
    but I’ll stand my ground
    …and I won’t back down

    (I won’t back down…)
Hey baby, there ain’t no easy way out

I have always believed that global warming is just a bunch of hooey being promoted by the media as the latest in it’s series of global catastrophes that will end human life as we know it. As was said below, this is a normal weather pattern that has occurred many times before.

However, I do believe that we need to promote reducing our dependence on oil, foreign or domestic. If the global warming folks can make this happen, I am all for it.

He’s tried so hard to educate us all and he’s done such a good job of leading by example, what with his environmentally-friendly and practical 28,000 sq ft home. And for all of you to just poo-poo all over his hard work. Why, he even invented the internet for the express purpose of warning us all about the dangers of global warming.

    Pfft.

Did someone actually REALLY honestly truly think the rising rate of storm losses had squat to do with global warming? Good grief. I suppose dental premiums are affected by the tooth fairy?

Should we do what we can to take care of the planet? Absolutely! Car pool, recycle, don’t leave lights on if you leave the room.

Temperatures and weather trends on this planet have gone through various cycles for millions of years. Can I get a “duh”?

But to suggest we can stop these cycles from happening? To suggest we have any impact on them whatsoever? That’s … a bit much.

This isn’t a liberal thing… This is a MONEY thing. Follow the money and you’ll find out that being “green” is just a new marketing tool for selling hybrids and solar panels. (And I’m willing to bet money there are some conservatives who are making a dime or two off the ‘green’ scheme, too.)

For the record, I lean liberal and I think Al Gore is full of it. Why people insist that all liberals think one way and all conservatives think another is beyond me. It’s so easy to blow holes in that ‘logic’. I’m amazed by how many folks continually insist it’s true.

    That’s all.

Please continue with the regularly scheduled alarmist-extremist hysteria.

Here’s my take – global warming is happening and mankind is affecting it. But it’s kind of like when I throw out a bucket of water into my yard . . . during a thunderstorm. Yes I added to the sum total but it’s not really that much. Yes I should refrain and my frefraining would make the yard better; but you can’t say I was the major cause.

I would rather not drill in ANWAR just because I like my wilderness as pristine as I can get it (not that ANWAR is that pristine at the moment, but you get my drift). I also believe that drilling in ANWAR just delays what we will inevitably need to do – find another fuel source. Corn won’t work, you can’t grow enough. Neither will sugar cane. But they’re a start.

As far as the screaming get us closer to free energy, gets us greater efficiency, gets us weaned off foreign sources of fuel, I’m all for it. I like the idea of reduce, reuse, recycle. I like the notion of turning on power and knowing I’m not contributing to pollution somewhere. I think we should strive for these things. But I can’t believe that a couple hundred years of human industry can so drastically alter weather patterns as to prematurely bring on a new ice age, or new desert age, or whatever.

there is a new villian in the mix; BIG LIGHT BULB! Tragicly, this is true. BIG LIGHTBULB (Westinghouse, GE,…) has convinced our politburo and Fearless-Leader to begin banning incandescent light bulbs beginning in 2010. Replacing them will be the glorious high-efficiency bulbs. OK, so they don’t last 1/2 as long as they say they should and contain Mercury which will poison our ground. The good news comrads is that they cost 3xs as much. And isn’t that a better way to reduce our need for foreign oil than drilling in Anwar or off the Florida coast like the current Chinese-Cuban joint venture.

All of you who have poo-pooed global warming, please list your scientific credentials…. I thought so …. I think if we compared all the scientific opinions on this, there is an overwhelming consensus that global warming, a/k/a climate change, is happening, and that it has been affected and accelerated by increased CO2 and other pollutants. And to inform you ignorami who blow without having read anything except that information put out by the well-paid scientific studies funded by Exxon, global warming is just the term for the first stage — the result on Earth is not just warming but all extremes of weather – hot, cold, more and less precip.
Getting back to this article, does it have to be one or the other – seems the rising losses on the coast would be from both more severe storms and the building expansion – duh ! Those who build there should pay the real cost of insurance – not look to others’ tax dollars or paying higher insurance to subsidize them.

NYOB, one doesn’t have to be a climatologist to understand the issues involved. Any person reading studies can determine their own position. In fact, that’s what most scientists do – especially in this area. They look at data that others have collected and make up their minds about what it means. They just happen to be specialists in that area while we aren’t. Get off your high horse.

well, i may not be a scientist…but not every scientist agree with the results…afterall, do you truly believe a politician whom says he invented the internet and says we have global warming? if so, i have a bridge over the Atlantic Ocean, i am willing to sell.

afterall, we all look at numbers or listen to voices and make our conclusions. that is why we have debates. if it is not conclusive, then it’s not totally so! i think yes we contribute to the environment. but we are not the sole reason for global warming, if that is really the cause. that be like stating, we might be in a recession, or may go in a recession – indicators are possibly there. so again, not eveyone is agreeing on this including many scientists.

By definition Al would have to keep his hand down, not being a scientist. Isn’t there a fundamental problem with a wealthy politician purporting to teach us some ‘truth’? Whose truth? How did we arrive at this truth? Don’t we know at this stage of civilization that truth today is often not truth tomorrow? Doesn’t that make it incumbent on the truth givers to make sure the truth they are selling us is really true? I guess that depends on what the definition of ‘is’ is.

Twelve-month long drop in world temperatures wipes out a century of warming

Over the past year, anecdotal evidence for a cooling planet has exploded. China has its coldest winter in 100 years. Baghdad sees its first snow in all recorded history. North America has the most snowcover in 50 years, with places like Wisconsin the highest since record-keeping began. Record levels of Antarctic sea ice, record cold in Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Australia, Iran, Greece, South Africa, Greenland, Argentina, Chile — the list goes on and on.

    There’s more at:

But you’re not allowed to read it if you’re not a scientist. Or Algore.
