In the late 90s, Montana changed its insurance privacy law. Basically, insurers had to have a written statement from all adult insureds to obtain and use their personal information. New customers couldn’t even get a quote until the written statement was on file.

New customer: Ring, ring. “Hi, I’m from Montana and I’d like to get a quote.”

Sales rep: “I’m sorry, I can’t give you a quote because you have not given written permission to collect your personal information. No, I cannot mail the form for you to complete because I would have to obtain your name and address.”

Because the state legislature meets only every other year, it took TWO YEARS to clean up this mess!

So, just what are the citizens of Montana doing that they need so much privacy? And I thought mountain air helped clear one’s thoughts!
