HARTFORD here is the answer ! Write more manufacturers as distributors in your Spectrum product. And write more Workers’ Comp with no underwriting whatsoever !

That is what you’re doing in our backyard. Just keep it up!

You know, its funny to see in the esteemed pages of the IJ a parade of carriers who are showing profits far less than last years numbers-Hartford, Travelers, Chubb-all the main players. If investment income falls, then underwriting income will have to rise to compensate-and that my friends generally means rate increases as the guys holding the stocks won’t be patient for long and really won’t care why eps is down-just that it is. The question is how much can be gotten in a recession with the distinct possibility of inflation over the next several years.

How about combining Lawyers Professional Liability on a BOP for half the price of the standalone malpractice policy and then targeting small real estate attorneys in Massachusetts? No underwriting required….just get the premium in the door! Glad I sold my stock 9 months ago

I don’t know where you guys are located, but Hartford’s prices are pretty darn high here in Texas for personal AND commercial. And, they nit pick the crap out of the commercial policies we submit.

Anyone notice this was an article about investment losses? How does this reflect poorly on Hartford’s underwriting? Do you people at Traveler’s ever do work?

…that after two tours of duty with The Hartford, it seems my old company has moved from very ‘conservative’ to a market leader in terms of pricing. It makes me wonder what my performance reviews would have been like, had we actually been able to compete for business and not watch our renewals walk out the door.
