Markel’s Albanese Moves to U.S.; Stovin, Brazil Promoted

Markel Corp. announced that Gerry Albanese, president and chief operating officer of Markel International since 2003, will return to the United States to assume a senior executive position with Markel Corp.

William Stovin will replace Albanese as president and chief operating officer of Markel International, effective Sept. 1. At the same time, Jeremy Brazil will become president of Markel International Insurance Company Limited, in addition to his role as active underwriter of Markel Syndicate 3000.

Markel International is the London based subsidiary for the international operations of Markel Corp, the international property and casualty group headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. Markel International operates through Markel International Insurance Company in the London company market and through Markel Syndicate 3000 at Lloyd’s.

As part of Markel International’s management team Stovin was heavily involved in the reorganization of the company immediately after its acquisition by Markel in 2000. In 2005, he was appointed director of administration and was responsible for legal and regulatory, IT, claims and special projects. In February 2008 he was promoted to chief administrative officer.

Jeremy Brazil has been underwriting in the London market since 1989. At Markel International he became director of reinsurance in 2001 and for the past two years he has been responsible for the strategic management of Markel’s underwriting divisions as well as being responsible for Markel International’s reinsurance buying strategy.
