Here in Washington it will remain under the Safeco name. My Marketing Rep didn’t bring brownies, but she sure knows her business and called me before I had a chance to call her!

Is the regional brand for comml lines in California to be named Safeco or Golden Eagle? They write different business and Safeco’s recognition in the marketplace would lose marketshare if combined under Golden Eagle’s logo.

Not all of them do. Some don’t know how to spell their own names.

Well, ours didn’t have any answers today, except for the 5 point commission bonus for the end of the year push. She did bring brownies, though.

Pete will tell you what’s going on. He’s topnotch – and I believe he’s now running the show in California?

So if I understand this right. Safeco will be the Personal Lines company, and will not do any Commercial. The Liberty Mutual Regional Markets will do Commercial, and will not do any Personal Lines?

So that means that all of my Peerless Personal Lines will become Safeco paper and programs. And all of my Safeco Commercial (I don’t have a lot) will become Peerless Commercial Lines products?

And how will LM make this run smoothly? My guess is that I’ll have to quote EVERYTHING, just to be sure that I’m getting a competitive program and price.

AND… one last question. Is Liberty Mutual going ahead with their plan to take Safeco direct to the consumer, just like AIG Direct and GEICO? It is my understanding that the SAFECO product will be in direct competition with the Independent Agents.

Not as far as I am aware. Liberty Mutual Agency markets (of which Safeco is now a part of) has committed to maintaining the sale of both the Personal Lines and Commercial Lines Products through the the agency distribution channel. The entire focus of the Liberty Agency Markets group is to grow in partnership with Independent Agents.

The future of the independ agents across the country is a fragile state. As big insurance companies continue to consolidate with other companies they will continue to find ways to cut fat. Automated underwriting, outsourcing, and direct writing are going gradually work its way into the dynamics of the industry. I have worked for a family owned independent agency and worked for Safeco insurance from the inside. I saw first hand how Safeco was aiming to go direct and generally phase out direct appointments for the independent agent across the country.
