Today’s employees are totally at the mercy of their boss. Age discrimination is a plague on this nation.

My last boss engaged in dodgy business practices and lied constantly. The employees were in constant fear of the wrath of this person.

With the economy down the toilet and people relying on their employer for afforable health care, people are chained to their job and the bosses know it.

Be thankful you have a job right now. If Obama has his way he is going to raise your bosses taxes and he will let you go. Then he is going to cancel that health insurance he has on you and pay the $750 fee and you will be buying your own insurance through the Goverment.

What a garbage article. It could just as easily be titled: “Economy Leaves Some US Drivers Stuck in Undesireable Cars” and then go on to whine about how the end of Cash for Clunkers left some people with a car they don’t like when they didn’t do anything about it.

It’s no wonder the rest of the world thinks we’re a bunch of pathetic cry-babies with no idea about self responsibility. “Whaaaa! My boss makes we work. I don’t get trophies for coming in on time.”

The boss is the same misreable creep she was before the economy went into the crapper, but now you’ve found another reason to do nothing about it.

    Suffer in silence please.

Are you kidding? I wish that my employees were at my mercy! You have to throw around incentives to get them to do their jobs that they are paid to do. They want all the benefits like flex time and work from home, smoking breaks, breaks if you don’t smoke, dress down all the time, no stress, accomodations for being Gen Y, shorter work weeks, more vacation, unlimited internet time and access…
Further, if you are really good at your profession, you can still change jobs in this market. Companies want talent, all the time. The Whiners aren’t the cream of the crop; if they were they wouldn’t be wasting their time whining.

Cynic Jeff, I’m so freaking tired of hearing what the world thinks of us. Who cares if they think we’re a nation of whiners. The rest of the world is on the government dole, so who is the whiner?

We work hard as a nation and that earns us the right to be ticked off about being over (or under) worked. But don’t feed us this bull about how the rest of the world sees us. These are tough times for some and some do take advanage. A few years ago, we had to put up with poor customer service because there were too few workers for too many service sector jobs. It will come back around. Maybe at a slower pace now that BO2 is stifling growth, but enough about the rest of the world’s perception of the US.

Being a boss, heres another point of view. It use to be when you had a “problem employee” one write up and they quit, seeing the writing on the wall. Now since people cant find other jobs you are stuck with these “losers” having to write them up again & again to the point where you have to fire them to get rid of them. And while they are being “written-up” they become a “cancer” to the rest of the work place. Or you “eliminate” their job, lay them off and be short staffed.

Hmmmm. My boss leaves me alone to do my job. In spite of my age my employer wants to keep me on because I have made myself a valued employee. And there are opportunities all the time if I choose to pursue them. They’re just more scarce than they used to be.

Yes, BO has made things way worse and things were rosier for me a year ago but I’m proud and glad to be part of my corporate team.

I’ll be the first to admit that there are some really bad bosses but too many times we mentally set ourselves up to be discontent. Decide to be happy in whatever the situation.

Let these employees try working for themselves and/or managing a group. There is a reason they can’t/don’t. I feel sorry for no one in the situation(s) the article describes. Want to keep the boss off your back? Then make attempt to outperform your peers and your boss will waste his/her time trying to “manage” the next guy.

I think everyone should check out Jon Gordon’s website jongordon dot com and
his book The No Complaining Rule. It addresses all the things mentioned in this article and more. Even if you are not in a position to implement the strategies at work, you can change yourself. Remember to focus on what YOU can change !

Which came first, the crappy employee or the horrible boss? Both feed off each other, but let’s just say there are plenty of each and leave it at that.

I get tingles up my leg knowing they have a job regardless if the fact that it may be menial.

Nice to know that they DON’T count the unemployment percentages (currently 10% of our economy) as those who now work only menial jobs and not the regular jobs they once had. Thank you media for not including this in the polling process!

We can effect change our messiah has long dreamed of!

I am sorry your staff is trying to get over. I am from the Old School where the boss is respected and much learned from. Another reason to hire an “older worker.” We work!

I’ve had one boss threaten to kill me because a caller lied to me about who he was and why he wanted to speak to said boss.

One required me to engage in questionable business practices and when I objected, was told – “You work here now!”

I have been wrongly accused of stealing and never apologized to when the boss found out he was wrong.

I guess I have a little touch of post traumatic stress as a result of some terrible experiences.
