while distracted PROFESSIONAL drivers are a matter of concern, *THE* larger risk is attributable to the NON-professionals.
employers have the hammer of requiring observation of protocol banning such use for fleet drivers and fleet insurers loss control folks will always ask dimensions of such programs.
folks who drive as part of their job have to me a far better general skill set too than your average blabber mouth weaving down the road yammering bout who did what last night on american idol.
no such hammer exists for these walking, talking (excessively) road hazards. and dont say their personal lines auto takes care of that, because it dosent.
what is needed is a TOTAL BAN on ALL cell communication WHATSOEVER by drivers.
hate to say i hope all personal injury lawyers will continue subpoeaning cell phones records as a matter of course but in this case, i hope they do to shunt liability where it deserves to be.
we’ll see whether common sense (yappers drive worse than drunk drivers has been REPEATEDLY shown to be true) yet cellular companies greed coupled with our american self-importance and general narcissism has so far triumphed.
if this country dosent have the stones to stand up the later, they deserve what they get.

“A group of Democratic members of Congress introduced a bill this summer requiring states to ban texting or e-mailing while operating a moving vehicle or lose 25 percent of their annual federal highway funding.”
The federal government is attempting to coerce individual states into doing what they want OR ELSE. Instead of taxing us and then holding our own money hostage how about not taking it from us in the first place. It’s good of the feds to do the study and share the results, but our state rights are being infringed upon – tell the federal government to mind their own business.

well, a total ban on all communications is not going to happen. most truckers rely on the CB radio. this is a vital information tool. agree, that most of the errors we see with driving is caused by the non-professional who is leaning against the window on the cell and clueless to the world outside. i find that most of these folks could find an ambulance, fire truck or other emergency vehicles on their rear and will not move. it amazes me how long folks wait to move out of the way. i keep thinking, what if it was them in the ambulance or their house burning down.

if you think about it, they did that with the hwy funding. based on the speed limits and where they were supposed to be in effect for the 55 mph and the population level. as you can see, that did not last long. but i still have not seen an upgrade on the highways, plenty bumpy!
