Pardon me Mr. Solvent, I felt it necessary to modify your statement somewhat, no harm intended. “As citizens we need to reward candidates that have the best overall performance for the voters and the country. It’s time to stop sending politicians to Office that short change voters just because it is easy to do and makes more money for the politician. That’s called being lazy.”

With all of the direct competition, it should come as no surprise that companies are changing commissions to agents. The exception in my opinion is commercial insurance as companies haven’t figured out how to break into that market directly. Those that have tried (think umbrellas and statues) have failed miserably.

As agents we need to reward companies that have the best overall package for the agent and the customer. It’s time to stop sending business to companies that short change agents just because they are easy to do business with. That’s called being lazy.

No, it’s not called being lazy, it’s called being efficient. While I don’t want to lay down and give up as an agent, we need to push back on compensation. But, those agents and brokers that aren’t efficient won’t survive the next few years. We just can’t make it without the ease of doing business-carriers put resources into these methods and essentially charge us back for them. Carriers can go direct in some cases (personal lines) but in others, like commercially driven accounts, relationships trump all other issues.

Tiger, we’re exactly on the same page. I don’t believe that direct will get the percentage of the personal lines market they want because most people still want that relationship with an agent. I also believe in working efficiently. That said, if company A has a great system and is a good fit for the customer and company B has a spectacular system and is a good fit for the customer, if company A pays substantially more that’s who I’m using.

hey folks are you people crazy,we already do all the companies work, we underwrite, rate it,submit it,and then someone pushed a button and it goes into the agency management system. And now they want to pay us less for that, I think they should pay us more, their expenses are less they have underwriting, and claims all working out of the living room with pink fussy slippers on. Please

Well folk it is a self-fulfilling situation. Agents sell whoever is cheap. Carriers fight to get cheaper and cheaper. And agents keep selling whoever is cheap.

And eventually, the only thing left is to cut expense – which means YOUR commission or contingency.

This isn’t rocket science, you buffoons. You think that companies are here just to pay YOU money? Start selling coverage, stability, and sound or reputable claim service, and the market will stabilize.

But as long as you keep selling the CHEAPEST product on the street, and keep welcoming every new flavor of the week that walks into your agency, in the end it ALL comes out of your pocket anyway!

And for those of you who are in bed with LIBERTY MUTUAL (aka Indiana, Peerless, et al), did you really believe that they were going to pay you big dollars for all of those cheap accounts you’ve been selling?

    Really? I mean c’mon. Really?

Target Market – you are my hero ! Finally, somebody who is willing to break it down in simple terms, and tell it like it is. I don’t want to badmouth all agents, because there are some good ones. But they are very few and far between. Just like there are very few good carriers too!

We perpetuate the problems that persist. We sell cheap, and then we wonder where our commission dollars go? DUH !! Sell something for 1/2 of what you used to sell it for, and guess what? You make 1/2 of what you used to make! And when the carriers are fighting to get down near to 100 combined – yes I said near – then those carriers must cut expense to get there.

Lower Expense = lower commission dollars. Lower Expense = fewer qualified underwriters to handle submission flow. Lower Expense = less services offered.

Sell appropriate price, coverage, and service instead of companies looking to buy market share with cheap pricing, and you’ll see your commission dollars increase. Wow, what a concept!
